Male cat suddenly trying screw female cat?

Okay.. I'll start off by saying my male cat is fixed and my female is not. I got the female cat from a friend who was suddenly moving away and couldn't take her with him. I haven't had any issues at all.... Until now.

They've been living together for almost a year. Make is 5, female is 2. They play fight, they get mad at each other, sometimes they snuggle. Overall live together pretty happily and without issue.

Starring Saturday evening, my male has been trying to mount the female and get it in, lol. I was not home Saturday evening but my fiancee texted me saying it was happening.. that is the first time either of us have noticed this. Fiancee told me that my cat was actually successful.. and in fact had sex with her. Now I wasn't there so I cannot fully attest to this.. but he said my female cat didn't fight back or anything. Just chilled.

Fast forward to today. It didn't happen yesterday (to our knowledge) but since about 8:30pm my male has been trying to mount the female. He's tried 4 times.. unsuccessfully and eventually rolls over and gives up. Again, she is not fighting back or making noise at all. Just chillin.

Could my female not being fixed be the source of this? I know I need to do it but at this current moment I legitimately do not have the money. Are there any other things I could chalk this up to? Are there ways I can make it stop? I have a 1 year old daughter and I don't want her to see that haha.

Help. Lol
