i need DESPERATE help.
my cats are, for the most part, well behaved, if only a bit annoying. i love them very much regardless.
my oldest cat, Cali, is about a year and a half old, and she knows the word no— my problem arises when i’m not around to tell her no or see what she’s doing.
she. loves. straws. she’s absolutely fucking obsessed with plastic straws and will stop at NOTHING to get one in her mouth. whether it’s in a milkshake, a soda, or just now, my seven dollar fucking coffee from dutch bros.
i did a huge cat-parent no-no and chased her down with a good swat to the rear, and IMMEDIATELY felt the same amount of guilt i’m sure people cheating on their partners feel.
any time i leave a drink unattended, even for a second, she goes in for the kill. doesn’t matter if it’s in a high place, the counter, my dresser- if she sees it, it’s hers, and it always, ALWAYS comes at the cost of my fucking carpet, of which i have to pay for the damages when i move out.
the obvious answer here is to stop using straws and stop leaving my drinks out, but i’m extremely spacey and often times forget that my cat is a godless heathen with a penchant for destruction.
how can i remedy this, without making my cat afraid of me?
