Hello,
I've been a cat owner all my life, but I've never had kittens come home at the same time from the same litter. In the past, my two Siamese had been spayed roughly three months apart, given the time it took to adopt both of them. This time is a bit of a doozy.
My two kittens, Kaija and Mischa, are tortie-point Siamese who came from the same litter and have been inseparable. If one goes into hiding, the other one chirps and mews to get them out. They're now six and a half months and went to get spayed yesterday morning. It's been roughly 40 hours since the initial spaying, they've been home maybe 36 hours. The problem? Kaija, who is normally the one who comes to Mischa's aid, can no longer stand the sight of Mischa. Kaija will purr and be happy; however, the moment Mischa gets within five feet of her, Kaija begins to growl and hiss until Mischa backs away -- and most of the time, Mischa isn't even aware that Kaija is nearby!
I know they won't be back to normal right away, and it hasn't even been two full days since they went under the operation, but I am a bit concerned. In the past, this scenario has never happened; however, I've also never had a duo that is as inseparable as these two pre-operation. My desperate online searches have led me to a plethora of reasons, but the fact that only one of the two acts this way is disheartening.
- Smells. Both should smell different from the anesthesia; however, why one took this to the extreme if it is the case, I do not know. Both have groomed many times since then.
- General pain. This one is understandable, but Kaija being purrs and cuddles with us and then swapping personalities the moment Mischa arrives, so much so that she gets growls and hisses at any movement at all, makes me think there is something else.
- Hallucinations. A few reads explained that the anesthesia can lead to hallucinations that could have a cat on edge for up to two days. This seems like a rare case, but... maybe? I don't know.
Any input or experience would be appreciated.
tl;dr: two female kittens of six and a half months got spayed on the same day. Both were inseparable, but now one of them seems to be extremely hostile whenever in roughly five foot proximity of the other. It breaks our hearts to see them not able to be near each other, and cats sadly cannot tell us what is bothering them for us to know what to do.
