Hi everyone! I've never posted to this sub before so please excuse me if ive made any mistakes.
I volunteer for a local animal rescue, i help out with events and going out on rescue missions but have also had 2 foster dogs. About two weeks ago i saw on my volunteer page an old girl rescued from the reserve needed a "Retirement home" Shes been with another woman (Who is actually one of the rescues main directors) for 1 month but due to personal reasons she needed to find a new foster home. Shes 16 years old, and shes a very very large shepherd. I wanted to take her because im not working right now and i figured it would be perfect to have her around and keep each other company while i do my studies, she also has cancer and arthritis, and a lower maintenance dog would be perfect for me right now.
This dog is so sweet, im already in love with her and shes great company. She doesint do much and does not care for much as expected, i give her painkillers on her scheduled times and we just hangout. But... i know she should be put down. She has an extremely hard time getting up and walking, and she is basically always in discomfort. The reason i know is because she pants , and i thought she could just be hot but it has not stopped even when she goes outside. I had a dog who passed away, and she used to pant just like this when she was in pain or discomfort. Its really hard to watch . She still wags her tail while laying down sometimes and she seems to feel comfortable here with me and likes me, shes still eating and going out to go the bathroom, but i know shes ready to go. this is no way for a dog to live. Shes in pain and shes uncomfortable.
we went to the vet last week because she had a new lump and i asked the vet when does he think its time and he says its up to the rescue, but if still eating and drinking and going outside to go to the bathroom then they dont always feel obligated unless it is advised by him.
Where im going with this is, i feel extremely out of line telling her that this dog should be put to rest because ive only had her two weeks and she had her a month, and i just feel like its not my place. I dont really know what to do because i dont want to seem like a know-it-all but at the same time, i feel like they should know this dog should be sent to doggy heaven because they are rescue experts. Any advise on what i should do would be much appreciated
