TLDR: Is there such a thing as hospice dog-sitting for pets? Dilemma with needing to travel for one week to see elderly parent but also have a very senior on-the-edge pet.
We have a 17 year old medium sized dog who can no longer walk. He is otherwise happy and we believe he still wants to be alive. We spoke to a vet six months ago and are going by his advice that the dog will let us know when it's time and we are committed to caring for him until then. It's been six months; he could go for another six.
He can't walk or stand so needs daily toileting (changing puppy pads and spot baths so he doesn't get urine burns) and pain meds twice a day plus CBD. His appetite is good.
Dilemma: we need to fly across country to help 85 year old mother who also has health problems. We've postponed because of dog but cannot postpone any more.
It's not a case of dog versus mother. The Solomon Solution is that since I'm the daughter-in-law, I will stay behind to look after dog BUT I would rather see the mother, who, TBH, I love more than the dog.
I'm hoping there's an alternative to Solomon. Is there such a thing as week-long hospice dog sitting for pets? How do I find it or search for it in my city?
And, just for emotional support: has anyone ever been in a similar situation?
