Newly adopted cat might have separation anxiety

Hey y’all,

So I just adopted a 2 year old cat a couple days ago. I’m a college student living in a one bedroom apartment. He is the sweetest and most affectionate cat I have ever met. Loves to cuddle, lick me, knead, never stops purring. Absolutely great and easy transition into the apartment from the humane society. So, here’s the deal. I left him to go to class last night for a few hours, made sure he had water and some food, plenty of toys, and left some lights on for him. When I got home I couldn’t find him anywhere and that’s when he came out from under my bed excited to see me. Today, I had class this morning and when I left he was napping on the couch. When I got home, he was once again nowhere in sight until he came out from behind my couch, again, excited but also looks cautious. A couple hours ago I had a package delivered and went to the door to get it. When I come back up the stairs, he is hiding behind the couch, he looked very nervous so I started talking to him and he came right out to me. I did some research and think he might have some sort of separation anxiety, with the sound of the door possibly being a trigger for that.

I’m looking for any ideas, suggestions, or solutions to help little wicket feel happy, and not run and hide when I leave my apartment. Thank you 😸
