Hello r/pets! I really need your help. Today, my girlfriend and I adopted a little four month old kitten that we found on Craigslist. When we went over to pick him up, we noticed the home of the lady who was selling him was super messy, smelly, and frankly, downright disgusting. She said she had just given him a flea bath, but on the drive home, we noticed two fleas crawling around in the poor guy's fur. Needless to say, I was pretty upset with the seller..
Now, I have dealt with fleas before. I was actually in a similar situation with a cat I had adopted years ago. And the only way I actually got rid of them all was by moving out of my apartment.
Because of this, I told my girlfriend there's no way we can keep him in the house with fleas on him. That's how my apartment ended up becoming completely infested with fleas, and it's something I never want to have to deal with ever again. (The thought of watching fleas jumping off the floor and onto my legs still makes me sick years later.)
So currently, we have the little guy out in the garage in his crate with a space heater, because I'm unsure of what to do. And I feel terrible, this is obviously not fair to him. The flea bath stuff I got at the pet store a long time ago never worked for my old cat, and I'm afraid that if I bring him in the house, it will get infested, just like my apartment years ago.
What do I do? Should I call a vet? Do they offer like, professional flea baths? I need to do something as soon as possible so I can get our new kitty into a proper, warm home instead of being cooped up out in the garage. Please help me! Your advice is appreciated. Thank you.
