Is it considered animal abuse to temporarily have my cat in a tent in the backyard in 43 degree weather?

I'll try to make it concise:

  • I thought I was going to be moving to China for a job by early January, so set my lease to end December 31
  • The paperwork for the job is taking longer than expected, will probably be another month
  • I have nowhere to live, so I decided to move back in with my parents for the time being. They don't like animals in the house and said my cat would have to be in the garage for a month
  • I wanted to rent a room elsewhere, but I couldn't find a decent place that would let me live there for only 1 month
  • I spent over $300 on a large tent (since I was planning on paying rent for a room but couldn't find one) and set it up the same night I moved into my parents house.
  • I put all my cat's stuff in the tent, and I slept with him the first night (yesterday). I was FREEZING.
  • He is now in the tent again for a second night. His old owner I adopted him from said she can watch him starting tomorrow.

I feel so bad. He hasn't eaten any of his food, or had any of his water to my knowledge.. I took him from my nice apartment to a cold tent. It's california so it doesn't drop below 43 at night. Is this abuse??
