Sorry about poorly thought out post - I’m in shock and just need immediate guidance.
My husband and I had two dogs. Two small Maltese x poodles, a 7 year old male and a 15+ year old female.
We then adopted a 12 month old rescue pure bread English Staffy who had been socialised with other dogs and had no known issues. He got along very well with our two dogs for about two months. In fact, extremely well with the 7 yo male, they play together constantly and love each other. They’re play fighting together as a write this.
Then about two weeks before Christmas my husbands grandmother died, who also had two smaller breed dogs. One a 12 yo poodle x foxy, the other a 10 yo straight foxy. We didn’t want two more dogs - three was already a lot. But there was no where else for them to go and despite us pleading with other family members to take them we ended up taking them.
We moved them in about two weeks ago. All was fine for those two weeks - no fights, a little growling and barking from the poodle x foxy towards both the 7yo and the Staffy, but we brushed that off as pretty normal for a foxy breed (he’s always been a barker/growler but showed no aggression beyond that).
I was late home from work today and my husband was repeatedly calling me while I was in a meeting. By the time I got to the phone he told me he got home from work and found the poodle x foxy mauled to death. He had been hurt to the throat outside and dragged himself inside and bled out on the floor. It looks like an artery was hit based on the spray of blood all over our lounge room.
All the other dogs are acting perfectly normal. None of them have blood on them. They’re all still getting along brilliantly. But we can’t discount that one of them did it. Our head goes straight to the Staffy, being the largest dog. And I know we should put down whichever dog did it, and I don’t want that dog around the other dog’s, but can we put down the Staffy on a hunch that it was him? What if it wasn’t him?
What do we do? We can’t prove anything... any advice?
TLDR: one of our dogs killed another of our dogs, but we don’t know which one. We’re assuming it’s the Staffy but what do we do since we can’t prove it?
