hi! not sure if this the right place to post this. i am a college student who moved away from home. about a year ago, a beloved family cat died, and my parents quickly bought a kitten to take its place. they own two dogs who are well cared for and my cat, who they take care of immensely (my cat is a self-regulatory cat in terms of food and is elderly, so not all that energetic. he has hyperthyroidism but has been fine w/ meds, which he gets regularly). anyways. this kitten is now 1 1/2, and she is severely overweight and depressed. she weighs at least twenty pounds and hides under my bed all day (i dont live at home so my room is the most empty room she can access). i feel awful everytime i come home and have argued with my parents multiple times, and my sister. my sister is an adult who has high-functioning autism. she lives at home and my parents have placed the cats feeding in her hands. my sister just gives her anything if she meows for it. i have bought healthy cat food, bought measurement cups, etc., that my sister claims to use, but if anything the cat has gained weight. i'm absolutely certain she is still giving her as much as she wants. there is NO reason to free feed because my cat is fed wet food (all he will eat at his age) and im super frustrated. no one plays with this cat either- she knocks things over in my sisters room (trying to play) and she yells at her and throws the cat out. shes under the bed all the time, and my parents are older and dont really know how to play with a cat. i am not home very often so i can not do much personally. i want this kitty to be happy. any advice? i've had serious talks with my parents, and they seem motivated, but then dont really do anything. they dont bring her to the vet because they probably dont want to be told that she is on the way to early death. shes so sad and scared all the time, i took her out from under my bed and tried to play and she just sat in a corner and stared at me, terrified. im at a loss. any advice?
