So we have 2 male cats, a 2 year old (call him S) and a 7 month old (L). We've had S since he was a kitten and he's always been very calm and well behaved. L however is a different story and VERY stubborn.
Before we adopted L, we moved into a new apartment and purchased a fairly expensive couch. Unfortunately, S decided that the underside of the couch was a great hiding spot and tore up the bottom. While we aren't happy about it, it didn't really bother us because he was just sleeping in it. So we purchased some more cat beds and cat trees for him so he wouldn't use the couch as a bed. HOWEVER, since we adopted L, L has been completely destorying it. He'll climb inside and scratch out the stuffing for the back of the couch. Of course this has also led to S using it as a bed again and then L will try to play with S by attacking the inside of the couch. We don't know what to do anymore.
They currently have 6 cat trees, 2 large windows to look out (with seats for them too look out), 2 buckets of toys plus tunnels and 'self-play" toys, and space above the cupboards to use as a bed. Our entire apartment is laid out so that they can use the upper levels of bookshelves as part of a kitty high way and avoid each other. They are only ever alone for maybe 4 hours at a time and we play with L for abour 2-3 hours a day, as well as for 10 minute intervals throughout the day (ie: whenever we move through different rooms we'll play with him).
We know kittens have high energy out puts and we know S needs his own space so we've tried increasing play time with L and moving furniture around so they both have more spaces to explore. We make sure to rotate toys so they don't get bored of them. We've even tried stuffing the bottom of the couch so they cant climb in but somehow they keep getting through. However, nothing is working and I'm trying so hard not to use a water bottle or spank him but my frustration levels are through the roof right now and I don't know what to do :(
