Okay so. I have a dog who is a year old, Elizabeth. When we first got her she was a puppy and we lived in an apartment so we trained her to use puppy pads, she picked up on it pretty quickly so everything was good. We recently moved into a townhouse with the intentions of getting her to stop using the puppy pads and to train her to potty outside. When we first moved she would pee right by the back door where my older dog goes to the bathroom regularly (outside). Now we have her trained to go potty outside but she won't go out of her way to hold her bladder. It's like she knows that she should go potty outside but if we don't let her out at the right time or soon enough she will just pee on the floor.
The part that is difficult is that everything I have read says not to punish your dog for going potty in the house because it will make them afraid to go potty in front of you. We did this when we trained her the first time so now she won't go potty in front of us only when we're not there or we are far enough away. When we take her to the back yard to go potty we either have to act like we're not watching or watch from the back wall of the room so she doesn't feel like we see her then she will go potty and we give her lots of treats. She is going potty outside more frequently now but every night she pees in the house and if we leave her in her kennel for longer than an hour she will pee in her kennel. I don't know how to teach her to stop peeing inside seeing as how she won't pee in front of me so I cannot catch/correct her in the act.
Any advice?
