We found the perfect new home for our older cat and he's living there as of last night. The prospective new owners came over, we learned about them, they bonded with the cat. At the end of the evening we were confident that they were the right people to give him a new home. The new family is ecstatic. We are sad but happy for him as he will be in a much better situation, and I know he will love it there.
A few days ago I made a post on /pets titled "Rehoming an older cat" asking for advice. I received only hatred and judgement, including personal attacks, from several responders before I gave up and deleted my account. What exactly we're those judgemental responses intended to do? Force a person you've never met to stay in a situation they couldn't stay in, and keep in animal from finding a better home? I reached out with honesty and I paid for it. Had I lied and said I was being shipped out to Iran and had no other options, I would have been praised, sympathised with, and given advice, the last of which is all I was asking for... To help an animal that, believe it or not, we truly loved and we already miss.
The next time someone asks for help, aside from enabling actual animal abuse, please take a moment and think before hitting that Send button and vomiting your vitriol on someone you don't even know. If nothing else, do it for the animals you claim to have such compassion for. All it takes is 1 step past what's on the surface and reflecting on the situation. I have a feeling this is something that's needed in many people's lives nowadays.
It would also be nice if the internet were used as more of a tool than a vehicle for self-righteousness behind a wall of anonymity. But then again I also wish I could shit cotton candy, so...
