Hey guys, I’m at my wits end. I’ve had Roberta for about two years now, after a long story I don’t really want to get into.
A quick rundown of what I’ve learned about her over these past two years: She is aggressive towards young women (I am a young woman so I understand why she probably won’t let me brush her), she absolutely LOVES my mom, she has sharp teeth and a strong bite, she is pretty chunky (no matter what we do we can’t slim her down for some reason, but it’s mostly muscle, she’s very strong), she loves to roll around in the dirt, her fur is gritty a lot (but she’s black so it doesn’t show up until you scratch her butt), and she’s very territorial.
We’ve deduced that she was probably abused before we got her, hence the aggressive and territorial nature. She bites without warning, not even a growl, though Ive learned the signs of when she’s uncomfortable and will leave her alone if she gives me the whale eye.
However, I NEED to brush her. I’ve tried the toys. I’ve tried distracting her. I’ve tried being casual about it, and I can’t sedate her without prescription pills. She has fleas (not badly, but I want to get rid of them) and she’s gritty and has dandruff, so I really really need to brush her, but in order to get prescription pills I’d have to go through this whole process of taking her to the vet and using money from my own pocket, while I only have a part time job.
I could really use some insight on this, I need advice and help. How can I get her to see that the brush is not scary???
