TLDR: Sloppy job by our vet has resulted in repeated unnecessary visits, charges, and re-bandaging. We feel pulled along and powerless. What can we do?
My partner and I adopted a french bulldog puppy, Bean, and she is now 6 months old. A couple weeks ago, Bean broke her leg. The break is a Tibial Crest Avulsion. She received surgery at the recommendation of the vet and was put in a molded splint along the outside of her leg, held in place by bandaging and soft-cast material. The idea is to keep her weight off the fracture and prevent the dog from bending her knee.
1 day after returning home with the bandage, it appeared to have slipped down her leg. The slip was enough to cause concern and prompt us to send photos to the vet via email. They instructed us to come in and have it rewrapped. They tried to charge, but we successfully refuted the payment.
2 days later, the new bandage has also slipped too low – her leg is able to bend at the knee joint. We bring Bean in and she has a new bandage put on. We are unable to refute the charge this time.
Today, 10 days later, Bean was brought in for her scheduled 2-week checkup. The vet advised that we continue with the splint. The vet changed her bandaging. As soon as I arrived home with the dog, she stretched out in her enclosure to reveal the most significant knee bending of any bandage yet. I immediately snap a photo and send to the vet and they ask me to come back in for rewrapping. I am not charged for this visit.
I realize all animal health issues are frustrating and bring on trying times. However, this feels like serious incompetence or negligence or just plain disinterest on the part of our vet. It’s taken a lot of our time, it’s draining our money, and worst of all: I worry that our pup is in danger of not properly healing as a result of sloppy bandaging and excessive rewraps.
Four more weeks of healing. What can we do? Can we report this veterinary clinic? At what point should legal action be taken for time spent or money collected or future health complications relating to Bean?
Edit: timeline clarity
