Sick Dog

Before I get into it, I want to give two caveats.

  1. My city is in shut down and google suggests that even emergency vets might not be open. My brother in law is a vet so if this a vet thing, he is pretty easily available by phone. I am happy to lean into that.

  2. My dog is allergic/intolerant to SO MANY things. I had her more than 8 months before she grew fur because even fancy limited ingredient food made her have diarrhea and lose fur and more. I have a lot of experience with her eating something that creates these symptoms and am following the guidelines the vet gave me I am just anxious because they are completely closed and I cannot even call for advice.

Around 24hours ago my dog (7-8, Lhasa Apso mix, arthritis and multiple allergies/intolerances) started having a mix of diarrhea and vomiting. I gave her a not-bully stick on Sunday and attributed it to that, as ingredients aren’t labeled and I am dumb.

This continued through the night, with her waking me at 2:30 and 5:30 for another round. We had our morning walk and she is alert, happy, and playful, but still has diarrhea.

Around 11 am with no repeats, my roommate agreed to watch her while I took a nap. I woke around 2:30pm and made a grocery run (we have designated me as fetcher of food during the pandemic). During this time my pup coughed up phlegm but this is normal given time or year and seasonal allergies.

Took her on her normal evening walk and all was good, even with soft (not liquid) poo. Upon returning home she spent a good deal of time trying to get food and treats and I had to take away her bone. (Vet advice is to give plenty of water and no food when these happen. Tomorrow I can start with rice and pumpkin. If tolerated a half portion of food Thursday and full Friday. This has always worked.)

About two hour after her evening walk she started whimpering so I brought her to the bath. (I have always lived in apartments and rarely on the first floor. I trained her young that when she has these incidences she can go in the shower. I can clean and sanitize it and keep tools on hand. Even with effort, a diarrhea day is typical every two to three months. Vet knows.) She had diarrhea again.

She hasn’t vomited since last night but the diarrhea worries me. Normally it stops by the next afternoon.

She is quieter than usually but still eager to see people, whined when I wouldn’t let her play with other dogs on her walk, and is performing for treats as well as being highly affectionate with me and my roommates. She is also drinking plenty of water and I discovered where she hid some treats. Her belly is normal and not tender and she is still jumping around and super eager for walks.

I have PTSD which makes me hyperviligant and anxious especially around death/losing her. My logic side says if she is still happy and alert and hungry, the signs the vet told me to watch, this is just another of the same issue she has had since she was a puppy and I’m an idiot for giving her an unlabeled treat. My emotional side, already on alert from the pandemic, says this is a complete crisis and I need to cross state lines to find a vet.

Please give your opinion to a panicked dog dad in a shut down city.
