How should I be handling my hamster?

I got her about 2 weeks ago. She's about a month old I think. She likes to stay in her tunnels most of the time and comes out to exercise and bite the bars of her cage at night. I really want to handle her and get her to trust me but I don't want to frighten her. I've been grabbing her out of her cage but I don't think I should be doing it anymore since it will probably scare her. How should I get her to want to be held by me? I put my hand in her cage and let her smell me for a bit then took a bit of food out of her bowl and she took it off my hand and ate it. Is this good? What should I be doing?
