Will I still be able to find a pet that fits me?

My girlfriend doesn't allow me to have pets and my only options are to have a cat or a bunny, her choice of her favorite two pets. She promises though that I'll still be able to find one that I fall in love with even if they aren't even close to the type of animal that I would pick for myself. What do you think would be my best bet? Should I check out a shelter once a week or maybe go visit rescues? Do they even allow people to visit who are just "looking"?

I hope that I can still find one with a personality that suits mine. I really wanted a large, active dog because I'm a very outdoorsy person but she told me that it's not ethical to put a leash on a cat or a rabbit or to take them for walks and I'm very afraid that it will be hard for me to find one with the personality of a dog. Is it possible for cats to be loving? Even the best cats my parents had were all aloof and didn't care when you came home. Is it possible for rabbits to play fetch?
