Cat Eating Question

We recently adopted my cat from our local animal shelter. They found him on the street, so he is a bit malnourished and underweight. We've had issues with him throwing up every 1-2 days usually. It's almost always in the evening. They told us when we adopted him that he has a small stomach, so he will throw up his food if he eats too quickly/too much. But what I'm concerned about - he always throws up hours after eating his last meal. Sometimes up to 5. Is this normal of a cat overeating or should I be concerned that something else is wrong?
