Is panting in cats always a problem?

I have two cats are who are both about 2.5 years old. I take them on walks around my neighborhood and they get so excited by the sounds and smells that they start panting. They do the same thing when they chase after a bug in my condo (cicada season was interesting). They're both healthy and the vet didn't mention any health issues, respiratory or other. However, I've seen several posts noting that cats aren't supposed to pant and it's a sign of illness or stress. I'm inclined to believe that they are just in hunt mode because they're both healthy, in good shape, and love exploring. They wouldn't rush to the door when it's time to walk around if they found it stressful, and since they both do it (and aren't related) I think it might be a shared excitement. Is it possible that this is just a little quirk of theirs, or do I need to get them checked out?
