New pet for my wife and I!

Unfortunately my Betta fish recently passed away after living a happy 3 years in his planted tank all to himself. My wife was really upset about it and I miss the little guy too. Before he passed, I was entertaining the thought of upgrading him to a 10/20 Gallon tank and adding in some Betta safe community fish.

Now that he is gone however, the thought of getting a totally new little friend or friends has crossed my mind. I'm still considering just upgrading the aquarium but with that same space I could house a reptile or small animal and have a pet I can actually interact with rather than strictly watch.

I'm torn on what route to go. Currently we're considering a leopard gecko, some kind of small rodent (heavily leaning towards fancy mice but a gerbil or hamster is not out of the question), or the aquarium. In a perfect world, I would absolutely LOVE a pair of fancy rats and they're like the perfect mix of size and affection level but I worry the space we have in our room may be too small or just plain awkward for an enclosure that size. (Whatever we get will be going on our dresser, no real space on the floor in the ro for something so big.)

Let me know which you guys think is the best choice! Budget isn't really a concern it's more of a space issue. Feel free to tell me your preferences and experience with any of these animals as well!
