Advice for a rescued Spaniel

Hey friends, sorry if this kind of post is not allowed. Just a bit lost and reddit is usually a wealth of endless knowledge.

A 1 year old cocker spaniel was rescued from a puppey mill (I hate some humans) and I am the lucky person that gets to foster him (and, hopefully, eventually adopt)

He's obviously been abused his whole life and is terrified of humans. He's spent the whole day behind my couch in the corner. I just wanted to know what I can/should do to help him. Would a hands off approach be better. Should I just feed him and let him do his thing, or should I stay near him all the time?

I'm in this for the long haul and just want him to have a good life, but also a bit inexperienced with previously abused animals, so any information would be much appreciated. Also if i'm not allowed to post this here, before you remove it, could you please direct me to the best place? Thanks so much everyone.
