Cat tree alternative?

I'm adopting a cat and am trying to "cattify" my place but since I live in a small apartment, where floor space is at a premium, I'm wondering if it would be possible to mimic the benefits of a cat tree with other items. I have lots of big windows and was wondering if I could get multiple window perches, a scratching post, and then some cardboard scratchers? It might seem like all those things would take up the same if not more floorspace as a cat tree, but it would be easier because I have small pockets around my apartment but lack a big dedicated zone. I would also be able to move those items more easily. I also, for reference, have a staircase facing onto my living room/a window so there would be some "vertical" space there as well.

I understand there are smaller cat trees and I can look into those if it is truly essential or if I will be doing my cat an injustice for failing to get one. But the question I really want answered is whether alternatives (i.e., perches, shelves, and scratchers both horizontal and vertical) can replace or provide a similar experience as a cat tree.

Thanks!
