I have a little cat (7 pounds at 7 years old) who absolutely hates cat rides. Think wailing, puking, drooling, other bodily functions uncontrollably, sometimes panting, and lethargy for several hours after the car ride has finished. I noticed that she spends a lot of time circling around and looking uncomfortable in the carrier. The one I've been using is what's recommended for her size, and she can do some small circles, but she can't stand upright and I wondered if maybe part of her anxiety is being restricted like that. So, I ordered a medium carrier for her, which she immediately took to. But because she's tiny, it's WAY bigger than she needs.
What are the dangers here, and from other pet owners' perspectives, do they outweigh the truly horrible time my poor baby has in the car in her small carrier? I'm mostly concerned that if I were to get in an accident with her in this carrier, there is obviously space for her to get tossed around inside, but was considering affixing some padding to the sides/top to try to minimize the risk of this. Ultimately, I'd rather her have a bad time in the car and arrive alive than be comfortable in a large carrier and sustain life threatening injuries from getting chucked around in the case of a car accident. However, as it stands now, I specifically put off things like vet visits until absolutely necessary because I worry so much about her reaction to being in the car.
Maybe I'm being a psycho and way overthinking this, but any insight would be much appreciated
