Hey y'all,
TLDR: I'm looking for suggestions for a makeshift doggy door for my bedroom.
I need some help figuring out something for my dog to use to get in and out of my bedroom. My dog Hannah, about 13, loves to sleep in my room with me. I have no problem with her sleeping in there with me overnight, but I also like to have my door closed because my house tends to be (unavoidably) noisy in the morning, plus privacy is naturally nice. Around this same noisy time, Hannah likes to leave my room to go eat her breakfast and go out, and she'll scratch at the door until I let her out. But once I do, and given about ten minutes for her to do her business, she's right back to the re-closed door, scratching at it until I let her back into my room.
Some mornings this cycle repeats two or three times, and if it was something that happened at 9 or 10am I certainly wouldn't mind because I should be up by then anyway--the problem is that she'll do this around 6 or 7am. I don't want to just keep her out entirely, because that's not fair to her and her happiness, and she'll only scratch the door until I give in. I could try to train her to not scratch but at her age I kind of just want to let her do whatever makes her happy (she's a decently well trained dog beside this anyway). I've tried to quiet down the house in the morning, but like I said above the noise is really unavoidable.
Trying to be creative then, I think some sort of doggy door would be the best course of action. My primary goals are to provide her the mobility she wants without me having to do much of anything, while also preserving my bedrooms privacy and moderate sound insulation. I've had a few ideas, but each has it's own issues:
- Installing a doggy door into my door, which is not a great look and can be rather expensive
- Buying a bead door, which would not do a great job of keeping sound out
- Buying a magnetic screen door, which I think would be optimal but I can't find one that's not see through (privacy)
- Buying a heavy, room-dividing curtain to put in my doorframe, which could be good but can also be expensive
So to y'all, what would you suggest? If you've had this issue, what did you do to fix it? Thanks in advance!
