I don't exactly want advice or have a question but more want to vent a little and hear about your experience.
On Saturday I will get my first rescue dog. I grew up with dogs so I am experienced in general. I never had a rescue dog though. Since our last family pet died when I was 17 I did not have another dog, though, since in my 20's my life style just wasn't suitable. Now that I am ready to get one I decided to adopt.
I saw my future dog posted in some animal rescue organisation and my partner and I fell in love instantly and applied. It all sorted out well, we got accepted, a transport got booked for it (the doggy is from Bulgaria, we live in Germany) and we prepared our home for his arrival.
While I prepared for the doggy I read 2 books and watched a lot of youtube videos about rescue dogs and former stray dogs and all the things that can go wrong because they are traumatized or not well socialised and I think I didn't do myself a favour by doing so. Of course I was aware about the difficulties with adopting a rescue and I was pretty confident I could handle that. But after hearing all these horror stories of people who - even though they were experienced - really couldn't manage their dogs trauma I am nervous as fuck and afraid to fuck it up. I tend to overthink things anyway but now I can't stop thinking about every possible thing that could go wrong and it drives me nuts. Last night I didn't sleep more than 2 hours 'cause my brain non stop showed me all the hundreds of thousands of things that may go wrong and I agonized over how I would react and solve the problem.
Of course I know that there are so many videos about negative experiences because people tend to only talk about things that went wrong while all these people who didn't have any problems stay mostly invisible because they don't feel the need to make a video. My brain won't shut up, though.
I want to be happy and look forward to the dog and not feel all these negative emotions right now.
