Getting a puppy with a senior cat

I’m researching a possibility of getting a dog sometime in the future, preferably a border collie. There are a lot of factors I have yet thought about, but this one I need some external help with, and its one of the most important ones as well.

I have a healthy senior (10+) cat, who is very sociable and affectionate to humans he knows (my parents, for example).

He is not the friendliest with our other pets. We adopted a +-3 year old female cat a few years ago (she passed away a few months ago), she was shy both with humans and him, and neither of the cats were super affectionate with each other (both neutered). I’ve seen them cuddle and sleep together only a few times, and sometimes play fight.

We have a ferret as well (adopted at around 1yo). I might keep him (I am moving out. He’ll either stay with my parents, or come with me and my cat. If I’ll keep the little guy, I will not be getting a dog without the appropriate research. Right now I am only considering my cat). My cat is neutral with the ferret, only the occasional b*tch slap for stealing his food.

So, I’m wondering if adopting a puppy and having him raised with the cat has a good probability of forming a healthy-friendly bond. Hoping to get a viewpoint from an experienced dog-cat owner.

I appreciate all of your replies. I assure anyone concerned, my cat’s safety and happiness is my priority, I will not sacrifice that to get a dog.

And, to clarify, I am not abandoning the ferret. He’s a family pet, and the cat is mine. Not to mention, I’m moving coasts, so my decision depends on my mode of transportation. I can’t fly with the ferret due to airline rules. And whether I will drive or not is yet to be decided due to several factors. Thanks for understanding.
