I've seen all of Jackson Galaxy's videos but actually doing it myself is kinda throwing me off! Any advice appreciated.
I have an 11 month old spayed female cat named Otter who I've had since she was 2 months old. Yesterday I adopted a 2 month old neutered male kitten named Petrie from the Humane Society.
The plan was to keep the new kitten, Petrie, in my bedroom, and let Otter have the run of the rest of the apartment and introduce them as Jackson Galaxy explains in his videos (I've also read his book Total Cat Mojo - this technique is also pretty much what the shelter suggested). They instantly had no issue with each other on opposite sides of the door and would go right up to it and sniff with no hissing or growling or anything. They seemed very curious about each other.
They each escaped their areas a few times accidentally, Petrie getting out into the rest of the apartment and Otter getting into the bedroom, and when this happened Otter would hiss a little bit at Petrie but no flattened ears and no growling. They touched noses a few times. Otter seems interested in smelling Petrie, not so much the other way around.
So should I just keep doing this - ie, keeping them separate? I've been rubbing Petrie with dish towels and feeding Otter treats on top of the towels so she associates good things with his scent. Should I start site swapping now? How do I know it's time to graduate to letting them see each other again since there doesn't seem to be any aggression at all through the closed door?
It's only been a day but I feel like they're off to a pretty good start already since they don't hiss through the door and seem okay that way already.
Thanks for any advice you can offer!
