Is reuniting kitten with her mother temporarily a good idea?

Quick background: A friend has a cat that gave birth to 4 kittens several months ago. I adopted one of those kittens. Now this friend is traveling and asked if I wanted to look after the mother for a month.

My question/concern is that reuniting the mother and kitten is only temporary. When her kittens got taken away the first time, she was depressed for a couple of days. Would it not be a similar situation once the friend returns from his trip and takes the mother back?

This is my first time owning a pet. I'm still learning a lot. I would appreciate any input on this situation.
