Hello all! This is my first dog on my own. I’ve had family dogs when I was younger. I adopted a 5yr old black lab/cattle dog mix, Daisy, about 3 weeks ago from a local shelter. She’s super sweet and playful but she does have bad walking manners (aggression towards other dogs/overprotective of me around people if they get too close) and has shown signs of having been abused in the past (flinching if I make big movements or if me and my sister are shouting 😅).
Now the issue, to me at least, is that when I hug or snuggle her or pet her with my body close to her, she gets really emotional but she doesn’t want me to stop hugging her, like she goes in for more. It makes me really sad for her and I’m not sure what I can/should do. Not to sound insensitive but can dogs show signs of trauma in this way? Or am I projecting? I don’t want to over react and it’s not even that deep to her.
P.S I’m already looking for a good training program for us. She already knew simple commands and I have been teaching her.
