Truth about pet boarding at a vet clinic

I used to volunteer at multiple vet clinics in Toronto (to apply to vet school). All of those places offered pet boarding for cats and dogs which consisted of cat condos and "dog runs" in their basement. The dog runs were very small rooms the size of a closet, with tiled floor and walls and a glass door. The lights would be kept off. The dogs would have one blanket to lie on, be served food once or twice a day, and walked 3 times a day. These walks were around the block. Not long enough for dogs to get exercise; just to poop.

Cats were kept in tiny cages, with a litterbox. They got no exercise.

The runs were so small that some dogs couldn't even turn around. They had to sit in the dark all day. If they cried, the vet would go downstairs and yell at them. "Shut up", and "piece of shit" were things he would yell at them frequently.

I would never recommend anyone to board their pets at the vet. You think you are doing the best thing for them since you are paying so much and they are supposed to professionals. Some dogs would become so depressed, they would have bloody diarrhea. When I would tell the management they would say it is not a big deal. For how much money they charge, they should care more. The staff are paid minimum wage and they have to juggle so much. Your pet's happiness is not on their list of priorities. All the vet owner/ management cares about is that nothing major or visible happens to the pets so they cannot be sued. Yet, pet boarding is a major source of profit for vet clinics.

Always ask to see the area your pet will be kept in when you yourself are physically at the clinic. If someone called beforehand to see the place, they would have the volunteers go down and make the place look really clean and presentable, whereas usually they were not.
