My eldest cat (Carolina aged 5) had started attacking our dog (Dexter aged 1) when he’s playing. She started watching and starting at him from her high places but today she’s attacked him twice when he was playing tug of war with the toys. Dexter isn’t violent and thought she was playing so turned to face her and dropped down to play on his front legs. Carolina responded by running and attacking the other cat (Glitch aged 2) they were both screaming at each other, scratching, biting, and pulling fur. This is behaviour that had only happened 2 years ago when Glitch first moved in.
I think Carolina didn’t like the way Dexter was playing with his toys, maybe she sees it as too violent or something? But later on in the afternoon she went out of her way to attack him again and then, once again, attacked Glitch too. Dexter wasn’t doing anything, just walking through the room, and even worse is Glitch doesn’t fight back she just wants to escape.
Carolina is normally the friendly cat, at least with people. I wouldn’t say she likes her Dexter or Glitch but she normally leaves them alone. Glitch is very quiet, always has been, and likes time by herself while Dexter likes everyone and just wants to play. As most puppies do.
Keeping them separate now, by which I mean Carolina is by herself, in the bedroom, and Glitch and Dexter are happily together in the living room and they’re fine.
Is this some kind of Alpha play by Carolina? How do I stop her from getting into this mentality? I don’t think Dexter will do anything to her but if he did I don’t think she’d win. She has all of upstairs + attic conversion to find her own space, her own toys, her own toilet, her own bed.
Have ordered some plug in cat calming aroma things to try and cool her down too.
Any help / advice is greatly apreciated :) thanks
