I have two Doberman Pinschers that came as a pair (same litter I believe). Both have problems with licking their paws, but one in particular is terrible about it and licks until his front left paw is bleeding and raw. My parents have tried everything: anti-lick sprays, cones, putting a sock or sleeve on it, wrapping the wound in gauze, and just straight up disciplining him (raising voice, timeout, etc.). Nevertheless, he never fails to remove the covering on his paw and lick. Even with his cone on, he manages to push it back far enough to where he can lick.
I remember reading that this is an allergic reaction of some sort to ingredients in his food. However, my mom refuses to take him to get allergy tested because it’s too expensive. I know: don’t get a pet if you aren’t prepared to treat it like your own child, but I feel like there isn’t much else I can personally do. I can tell it hurts him but he won’t stop.
Anyone have this problem before and get it fixed without allergy testing? Any solutions I haven’t tried? Thank you.
TLDR: My dog licks his paw raw and I don’t know how to stop it without taking him to a costly allergy test. Please help.
