I have a 9-week-old kitty (male) and a 10-year-old dachshund (male).
At first, when my dachshund saw the kitty at 3 weeks old he would sit below the table and just stare at him and whine (kitty was in the crate).
Fast forward to 8 weeks. I have a routine where my dachshund stays on one side of the house and the kitty on another and I alternate them when they need to go to the bathroom. At this point, they are aware of each other but my dachshund no longer gets excited. Throughout their day their playtime is separate but they sleep in the same room kitty in a crate and my dachshund free roams.
Last week the door was not closed properly so when I was passing by I saw my kitty and dachshund just staring at each other. They were both 1ft away from each other! The kitty looked very attentive he was sitting down upwards and the dachshund was with his head in the floor laying down and just stairing at him. I feel as though they were having a staring contest? When I came into the room they kept staring at each other so I calmly asked my dachshund to leave the room and he got up and left. Then I picked up the kitty and took him with me. So what does this behavior mean?
Here’s the odd part! After this strange interaction, my dachshund no longer makes eye contact with the kitty. (If the kitty looks at him he looks away or looks down) But when I’m not present my brother caught him sniffing around the cage.
Side note: I use to also have a routine where my dachshund and the kitty would see each other between a gate. The kitty use to want to play/ interact with my dachshund until he snapped at him (dachshund made a snapping sound with his mouth). After that, I kept the gate between them at all times.
9 weeks in my kitty is more active and playful and I’m having trouble understanding my dachshunds behavior. I feel as though he understands that there’s a new family member but he’s still on edge?
Should I reintroduce them again? Did any of you experience the same thing? Do you think they’ll be able to get along? How long will it take for them to engage without my supervision?
Any advice would be helpful!
