I might be getting allergy symptoms from my cats. Please help!

I would really appreciate any insights / tips.

I’m 31 years old and I have two cats. My cats are like children to me and I’m deeply attached to both of them.

I have had moments in my life when sleeping in the same room with a friend’s dog gave me allergy symptoms (stuffy nose, itchy eyes etc.). Until now, I’ve avoided letting my cats into the bedroom because I’ve been nervous about cat hair getting on my bed sheets.

However, 3 weeks ago that changed when me and my SO had to make some changes within our apartment. We live in a one bedroom apartment that has a large living room and we’ve been using said living room as a shared entertainment room and workroom (we both work from home). Some renovations had to be done in that room, so we moved our work desks into our bedroom and we’ve been letting the cats in every day because they get a lot of separation anxiety. When the work day is finished, we vacuum the whole bedroom and let it air out before going to sleep.

Last week, I woke up with a stuffy nose and itchy eyes. At first i thought it might be a flu but my only symptoms are: stuffy/watery nose, itchy eyes and itchy throat + today I’ve had some slight wheezing. I’ve been suffering from these symptoms every day for 5 days now and I’m starting to think It might be an allergic reaction to the cats. The living room renovations are complete and we’re going to move all our work stuff back in, but I’d like to ask some questions regarding my situation:

1) Do you have a pet while suffering from pet allergies? Does taking antihistamines manage your symptoms enough for you to live relatively normally/symptom free?

2) What kind of measures should we take to clean the bedroom of allergens? I know obvious stuff like changing the bedding and vacuuming, but should we also wash the ceiling/walls etc with a special solution of some sort?

3) Is there anything else I should do to keep symptoms as low as possible? I’m willing to do anything / take any medication to make sure I don’t have to let go of my cats.
