Introducing a new cat?

Hello, so a few years ago I did have to euthanize one of my childhood cats. It was very hard, and still is. I still had two remaining cats so I did not get another one. Well last week I had to euthanize another so now I am down to one cat. He has always had some separation anxiety I think, but my fiancé said it has been worse since she has left us. I started him on some anxiety medicine that seems to be helping, but I am wondering if I should get him a buddy or not. We are not home a lot and since he's been around other cats his whole life I guess I don't see how he can just be alone all day. The vet said cats usually adjust well and it's more when I am ready for another cat though. However, my current cat is about 12 or 13 years old, so I am not sure how bringing in another one would go. I do not think he would attack it, I am just worried he wouldn't like it. The local shelter has a cat they think would be good to try. It is calm and wouldn't bother him.
