I don’t know where’s best to get advice on this but our family chihuahua isn’t doing well. We got her when she was 5 as a rescue and she’s always had a couple health issues. Mainly she had an occasional thing where she would start “hacking” or breathing raggedly. It freaked us out but when we looked it up it said that it’s common for small dogs to make sounds like and could be from leashes around their neck and is benign. So we watched over her for a while and it suddenly got much worse with her randomly heaving loudly and often breathing heavily when she’s just laying down. We took her to a vet as soon as we could get in and they said they detected a “heart murmur” (they checked last visit and she didn’t have one). They also thought she might have fluid in her lungs but they didn’t have a x ray so they recommended us to another vet and asked that we track her breathing.
Now we are waiting for this X-ray and we tracked her breathing per minute and she was at 80 when a dog her size is supposed to be close to 30. I’ve been just picking her up and putting her on the grass during our walks so she doesn’t strain herself. I forgot this morning to pick her up in between the patch of grass and the dumpster and she started heaving and making noises after only a couple metres. Has anyone had this happen with their chihuahua? Does anyone know what this could be?
