My dog who hates being on furniture is now getting on all the furniture, is this normal?

In 2014 my husband and I rescued a dog from the pound. The pound vet said he was roughly 4 years old. He was clearly abused from his previous owners. He would freeze if a voice is raised regardless of reason. He would also run and hide. He also would freak out when we tried crate training and he would poop everywhere if you left him home alone. He would either hide or bark like mad whenever anyone of a darker skin tone would come over to the house. And he would refuse to be on any furniture for longer than a couple minutes.

I have worked with him a lot to help him recover and he's much better now. He still gets scared sometimes if a voice is raised at all and he still needs to be outside if we leave the house longer than a couple hours. This isn't much of an issue though because both my dogs have plenty of shade and shelter and water when outside and I rarely go anywhere anyways. It also rarely rains where I live.

We usually only allow the dogs on the furniture on command and not whenever they want to. My other dog is also a rescue but he's got dominance issues that we've been working on.

Recently my boy has been getting on the couch and just laying there for hours. I don't really mind this but it's such a weird change in behavior for him. He's been sleeping in bed with our son which is honestly something our son has tried to get him to do for years but he would never stay on the bed long. Now he won't get off the bed. He will steal someone's spot on the couch if they move off it or he will just get on it if no one is sitting in a spot.

I don't mind him on the bed or couch but it's so different in behavior from him that I wonder if I should worry. He's also started kinda staring odd into space. I will find him just sitting in a room staring at nothing or one of the kids until I get his attention.

This is unusual behavior for him but it's not bad behavior. I know he's getting old so maybe that's why but he's in good health and isn't in any pain and doesn't have any issues that I can tell.

Should I be worried about the behavior change or just be happy he's now comfortable being on the couch with us and snuggling our son at night?
