This is a male, 6 month old cat and is neutered. I dont feel like my current living situation is best for him but I want to try everything I can before giving up.
Some background, I got him a few months ago and he was about 3 months old when I got him. He was found by a friend on the side of the road and he had no where else to go. Poor guy was sick and covered in fleas and dirt. He's fine now im just not sure if this is the best living situation for him and am not sure what to do.
Im single and live alone in an apartment. I work full time onsite and am gone 8-10 hours a day. We are entering a crunch and things are about to get worse. On top of that I obviously have to do errands etc on my own. Often im gone 12 hours a day.
He has a lot of behavioral issues and Im 99% sure its all related to lack of attention. The problem is I cant physically be there enough.
His personality is extremely clingy and hyperactive. He runs around like a maniac whenever im home and has to do whatever Im doing. Open the fridge? He gets in there. Cooking? Let's see what human is making. He wont let me use my computer and I have to kick him out of the room if I need to do a video chat. He will scratch and bite me otherwise. He hops on my lap if im taking a shit.
He wont sleep with me and he has seemingly infinite energy so tiring him out doesnt work as "tired" is not a concept he is familiar with. So I have to close my door at night.
I dont think he does anything when im gone at work. Like he cant function alone and just sleeps. Its great he's so happy to see me but its also concerning to me he cant do anything by himself. This also explains why he has so much energy when im around him.
He has plenty of toys and a scratch pad and a cat tree but doesnt like most things I buy him.
He's so insane and clumsy and has no fear and im afraid he's going to get himself hurt. He has started door darting and nearly escaped this week. Im trying to find a solution there but now he has to stay in his room. If he escaped he could die as this is a very busy area.
His personality is so much different than my last cat who basically ignored me 24/7. Honestly I just dont know if this is good for him. He needs way more attention which I cant give him.
Some things I can try:
-Leash training
-Hire a pet sitter
-Better routine/more playtime (still wont be very much)
-Get another cat (seems like a bad idea but maybe?)
Any other ideas? I feel like rehoming should be an absolute last resort and want to try and make it work.
