I noticed this evening that my cat went into the bathroom where the litter tray is and did her usual digging around about 4 times in fairly quick succession. I followed her down on the last visit and she was squatting how she does when she poops and I could see her straining but nothing came out. I know she wasn't trying to pee because she pees in the human toilet and exclusively uses the litter tray to poop.
She's about 8 to 9 years old according to the vet. We don't really know her age properly because I took her in off the street. She does have quite substantial kidney disease but has been doing great on the kidney diet for over a year now. They also thought she had intestinal lymphoma because they could feel a lump in her tummy but at her last vet appointment they said they can no longer actually feel the lump, they were amazed. She's been on steroids for over a year now and she takes that nightly with her pillpocket. She is also FIV+ so she's strictly a house cat so I know she's not pooping outside. I checked the litter tray and there did seem to be a fairly recent poop in it but it wasn't warm (yes, I checked... The things you do for your beloved pets) so it must have been yesterday's poop. I completely emptied the tray out so that I can see if anything new gets left in it over night.
She doesn't seem to be acting different, maybe s little more moody tonight. I will consult the vet asap.
Really makes me worry any time she's not functioning perfectly as the last time she was ill she was practically at deaths door. She's been doing so great for a long time now, I just hope this isn't the start of some kind of downward spiral.
