How to handle this cat?

I have a cat that just tested positive for FIV I also have a cat that tested negative for FIV. I understand it’s difficult but possible for FIV to be passed on casually. I also understand FIV does not necessarily mean a cat is doomed to an unhealthy life.

Unfortunately, the cat that tested positive is strange.

We’ve had him for about five years now and adopted him when he was a kitten.

At six months old he already had a broken tail and based on his behavior the shelter thought he may have been abused. We also think that. For the most part it was doable to handle him. Until now.

In the last 72 hours he has done about 10k worth of damage -although most of it isn’t really his fault it does play a role- in medical bills and the destruction of a mattress.

My ex who adopted him with me was visiting and helped me get him to the vet. I guess she forgot how much he hates being picked up and ignored that he didn’t want us touching him because she picked him up and brushed an injection site from his vaccinations.

Instantly bit her. I don’t blame him for this. He walked away from us. He avoided being touched. He clearly did not want us around. He just reacted. It cause a severe infection partially due to her health and partially due to what I attribute to his weird love for eating trash. No, we do not actually let him get into trash but he was outdoor/indoor until now.

Where this is going: to even get vaccinated he has to be sedated. Unless he is so sick he cannot move we literally cannot give him his medication. He becomes 13 pounds of muscle, hate, and fear.

Thousands of medical bills later he decided he did not want to use his fresh litter box and instead chose to piss on my bed while I was at work.

The bed is ruined because I didn’t get home in time to stop the urine from setting in.

Besides this he actually seems happy being inside. There has been minimal begging to go outside.

He wants to play? We play. He wants attention? He gets attention.

Due to his behavior I can’t just give him a room of his own. He flips out, becomes utterly terrified, and cannot handle a closed door.

Does anyone have any ideas for how to manage this cat? I can’t continue to replace everything he destroys.

Edit: I totally forgot to mention that in about two or three weeks I’ll be temporarily living in a family member’s converted garage while my home is being almost entirely remodeled over several months and I cannot let him destroy their things.
