My apologies if this is not the right sub, I really need advice on this particular situation. I am becoming increasingly worried about my sweet kitty, Athena. Sometime last year, I brought her to vet to investigate a coughing fit she would have every so often and to get her shots. I was certain it was asthma and needed that confirmation so I could proceed with treatment.
I wish I never brought her to this specific vet. It was such a terrible visit and I was horrified with how they treated her. The vet put her on sedatives the entirety of the visit (which I understand to an extent, she can be aggressive with strangers). The vet called me a few hours after dropping her off to tell me they think she has diabetes. I just about lost my mind. A few years ago my Dad’s Siberian husky passed from diabetes, so I was nervous about this and pretty devastated.
The vet did additional testing and concluded she did not have diabetes however it was confirmed she has asthma. When I went to pick her up, the vet said she had an accident while they were trying to put her back in her crate due to the sedatives she was on. They sent her home with me covered in feces.
The only treatment option she gave to me for Athena’s asthma was a steroid that potentially comes with an array of negative side effects. They range from DIABETES, to heart problems, to blood pressure issues, to weight gain (she is already a bit chonky), to aggression. I made the decision that her mild case of asthma was better than the treatment alternative.
Fast forward to now, she has coughing fits regularly. I’m so worried. Has anyone else had to treat a kitty for asthma? Was the only treatment option provided to you a steroid? Does anyone know any other ways I can combat her asthma? I will be taking her to a different vet, I just also wanted to hear the experiences of the Reddit community as well. Did I make the wrong call with not putting her on the steroid sooner..? Any advice or suggestions are much appreciated.
TL/DR: My asthmatic cat’s condition has worsened, the treatment options given to me are no better.
