My cat knows what grounded means

So a bit of background, I've had my cat since she was born, my 3 cats (joker edjit and Houdini) are siblings, their mom died soon after giving birth so we syringe fed them cat formula and their dad, another one of our cats died before they were born so we couldn't bring ourselves to sell them or let them go somewhere else, we put their food cat litter and water in the kitchen, since we only have 5 rooms, including the bedrooms bathroom and kitchen, in the house and they aren't allowed in the basement because somewhere is a hole which they get outside from, so i started teaching them what grounded means, edjit was the first to pick it up, they are 7 now, i tell them that they're grounded and they go sit in the kitchen and wait for me to close the door, we just got a new kitten and she's learning aswell, i spank them once open handed on the bum to signal they're in trouble then tell them they're grounded, no abuse and no violence nessesary, i love my cats, they're taken care of by a local Charity rn (weekly litter and a big bag of cat food every 2 months) but overall with the grounding method they've become very obedient with little resistance
