Need advice for kittens going outside

Hi,

First time having kittens and need some advice. We have two 3 1/2 month old kittens, same litter, boy and girl. They are gorgeous and we love them to bits.

They are desperate to go outside. This may be partly our fault as we have kept them (litter tray/food etc) in the garden room which, unsurprisingly, has full view of the garden but from the moment we got them they have both meowed to go outside. Both have escaped at different times and we hate having to keep forcing them back inside but everything we read says they should be kept inside until they have been neutered.

They have both been fully vaccinated and wormed/flea treatments but neither have been neutered. Fred (boy) is due end of November but Shadow is a wee girl and we don't think she'll be big enough until after Xmas to go through the operation. So we've started to let them out a bit. They both have collars, we keep an eye on them at all times (as much as you can with cats!) and bring them in after a while (1/2hr or so).

They seem much happier and sleep like logs but we're worried if we're doing the right thing. We have a largeish garden but they are getting increasingly less fearful and venturing further away from the house which makes it harder to keep tabs on them. We haven't got a catflap installed yet as we were assuming we still had time before they would be going out and are worried about losing them or letting them out on their own. As mentioned tho it's going to be quite a while until Shadow, in particular, is going to be free to roam and I'm just not sure she's happy being inside all the time. We definitely cant let Fred out and not Shadow.

Hope this makes sense, I think I've attached a pic as cat tax

Thanks
