Older cat attacking new kitten

Hi there,

I recently got a 5 month old kitten, because my older cat unfortunately passed away. I also have one more four year old cat, who had a close relationship with the now deceased cat. My new kitten is a benghal, so he is very social and also, as a kitten, naturally quite cumbersome and curious.

I understand that it might take some time for an older cat to adjust to a new kitten, but things have been steadily getting out of hand. Firstly, the old cat just hissed at the new kitten, which I accepted as quite normal. About a week later though, the old cat started seeking out and attacking the kitten. We devoted a safe room for it, but whenever the door is open, the older cat deliberately comes in to attack the kitten. Just yesterday, the older cat had an aggresive episode with the kitten and ended up scratching it in multiple places around the back and neck. The kitten spends pretty much all of its time in hiding, and expresses severe pain when touched anywhere near the scratch spots. I looked them over and they're healing fine, but this is still unacceptable.

My question is, has anyone had a situation like this develop which has not ended badly? Is there still a chance of things getting better between them? Also, do you think that this will have long term effects on the kitten? Right now, it obviously seems distressed, but I'm worried if it'll ever be able to go back to normal.

Thanks in advance!
