PSA: The Hardest Decisions Are Probably The Best Ones

It's hard letting go. But if your pet is suffering it's probably better for them. Sucks for you but best for them.

I had a mixed Border Collie/Black Lab. Mid Sized all black with long hair. Beautiful dog her whole life! She shed like crazy even during the winter months her coat was so thick.

Over the last few days, she had become very lethargic and depressed looking. Her final days were lacking energy to eat or drink. I let her outside to go to the bathroom and she just didn't have the energy to squat and tinkle. She fell to the ground. I let her rest a couple of minutes in the grass and then I helped her up and she came back into the house and laid back down.

I took her to the vet on Thursday and they ran a series of tests on her. Minor case of hook worms and no heart worms which was good news to hear. But she was severely dehydrated (not drinking enough water will cause this with anyone) and she was severely anemic. She also had Renal Kidney Failure. That one word was something I did not want to hear... Renal. For animals, it's pretty much a death sentence.

The vet gave us a couple of options. They could give her Vitamin B supplements and try to perk her up a bit so we could take her home and spend the last couple of days with her loving on her. But I decided that I didn't want her to suffer. The vet said that she is probably having discomfort while urinating and she probably is in a bit of pain.

As much as it hurt, I decided to end her suffering (tears welling up now... GREAT!). My daughter was with me as well. She's 23 and I was not expecting her to have to go through this with me but she said it was OK. We cried, we hugged and then we said our goodbyes to our dog.

The vet brought in the syringe that would end her life and we loved on her as her life ended. The vet left and we loved on her a bit more saying our final goodbyes.

It's tough... one and a half days later and it's STILL hard to talk/type about!

The PSA part of this:

We all love our pets! This final decision is the hardest one anyone ever has to make EVER! But sometimes it HAS to be done. In order to keep things humane, no matter how much you don't want to let go, if the animal is suffering... It's better to end their discomfort and pain if nothing else can be done for them.

I'm happy that she's no longer suffering, but I am heart broken that I had to make that decision.

I miss you Shadow!!!

I feel for anyone here who has had to make that decision. This is my second time and it was as hard as the first!
