Should I get a cat, dog, or neither?

I grew up with cats and am therefore more accustomed to them, but some dog breeds are really cute. I live in a pet-friendly 2nd-floor apartment with my husband and no kids (yet). I also work from home, and have depression and anxiety. I’m starting to make progress in treating my depression, so I’m in a place where I can even consider taking on the responsibility of a pet. I would love a cuddly companion to keep me company during the day, but obviously would prefer one that’s relatively low-maintenance. My husband grew up with cats and dogs and would be happy with either. I know owning a pet is a long-term commitment, so I want to make sure I make the right choice.

I love all cats, but really like the idea of owning some of the exotic breeds like Persians, servals or sphinxes (but I’d more likely end up getting a short-haired rescue tbh). I’m more picky with dogs; I’d prefer something smaller and non-aggressive. I’m particularly fond of dachshunds, but don’t know the first thing about owning one.

PS: I also have an extended family member who’s allergic to cats, and another who is afraid of dogs and won’t go near them. I don’t have either person over frequently though, so I’m trying not to base my decision off of them too much.
