YSK: Cat "breeds" are mostly aesthetics unless you bought it from a reputable, responsible breeder

If cats are a product of backyard breeding, accidental litters, from outside cats, they are not being selected for breed temperaments and personalities (or health). They are likely to have wildly varied personalities and just some aesthetic characteristics that have remained like fur coloring and fur length.

There are many cats misidentified and marketed as certain breeds. Run of the mill tabbies are marketed as bengal mixes. Any long haired cat is part maine coon, part norwegian. That Russian Blue is just a gray cat, that Bombay is just a black cat. There are many Siamese mixes that "look Siamese" but they do not act like a purebred, typical Siamese. Many people attribute certain personality traits of their mixed or not responsibly bred cat to its breed when it's likely not related. All cat breeds are capable of being very affectionate, talkative, playful, or intelligent.

Also, some desired traits of highly sought after breeds are HARMFUL TO THE CAT, just like getting a flat faced pug. Flat faced cats like British/Exotic Shorthairs and Persians have health issues too. https://www.seniorcatwellness.com/flat-faced-cat-health-problems/

Scottish folds are not cute, it's cruel! The genetic mutation that causes their ear folds will result in painful conditions. Munchkin cats also suffer health problems from their short legs.

There is no such thing as a hypoallergenic cat, including hairless ones. Some cat breeds may produce less allergens but there's no guarantee your allergies will be tolerable. This is especially true if you're not certain of the cats genetic lineage. Too many people get gray cats or siamese colored ones and then have to return/rehome them because they are not actually hypoallergenic. Please try to find a "foster to adopt" near you to have a trial period before you commit to an animal. https://www.purina.co.uk/articles/cats/health/skin-fur-ears/myth-hypoallergenic-cats

Certain types of cats require more specialized care, making them a bad fit for most people's lifestyles. Intelligent, active cats are more prone to being destructive if they're bored. Long haired cats need to be brushed often to prevent matting. Hairless cats do require grooming, regular baths and body oils, and they get cold more easily. Please be honest to yourself about whether your lifestyle matches what they need.

Please also look at a cat's individual personality if you're looking for a cat that gets along with other animals or with kids. I would recommend looking for cats that have been raised in a similar environment. If your kids cannot recognize and respect an animal's boundaries, they are not safe with any animal.

TLDR; There are no personality or medical guarantees just because a cat looks like a certain breed.
Please do your research into the health conditions and lifestyle requirements of the animals you're interested in. There's no such thing as a hypoallergenic cat and certain breeds require more specialized care.
