So I will be moving to Berlin soon with my pet cat Norah (she’s an Indian stray who i adopted) Since I have to go first and do the house hunting bit, my husband would be bringing her with him on what’s going to be easily a 13 hour flight.
I could care less about the adjustments and changes I’ll have to settle into, what with being a literal third worlder moving into a new city alone. But I just haven’t been able to stop worrying about Norah, about 2 major things:
1- All the United and Delta airlines stuff has left me pretty shook, I keep wondering if Norah will survive the trip. She’s a feisty one, she’s survived an electrocution (she’s missing half a nose n wee bit of her hind leg from the accident) Also, she has taken quite a few road trips with us, stayed at Air BnB’s and other houses we’ve visited and the only thing that seemed to matter to her was that WE were there for her. However flights are very different from car trips and I am just too panicky since I’m not going to have any control over how the airlines handle her.
2- She is an indoor cat by her choice, as in she spends about 80% of her time at home. We live in our own apartment and the living room window opens into the corridors so she is free to roam around and do as she pleases, day or night. Any minute she sees the window closed, THEN she has to go out. I know the renting scene in Berlin in very competitive, I am willing to stay further away from office just so I can get her a ground floor home with a shared garden/terrace. But I would like to know the cultural etiquettes about pets in Germany, I don’t want her to trespass or do anything inappropriate, nor do I want to come across as an irresponsible pet owner.
Are outdoor cats a thing in Germany? Will she be able to handle the weather in the upcoming months? Am I doing the right thing by her, because we both are VERY attached to each other, she literally waits for me when I’m late from work. But I don’t want her to feel lonely and bored by confining her. How can I ensure this move is the best decision for both of us?
Sorry for the long post, I just have been consumed by this thought since the time I knew I have to move.
