So my boyfriend and I are about to move in together and I’m worried about how our pets will get along. He has a pitty mix, I have a cat who can be a little shy and anxious at times. The dog is not bothered by cats unless the cat seems nervous and on edge. When he is at his sister house, who has a cat who is used to dogs, he pays it no mind and leave it be. I love the dog and he is a good boy, but I am concerned about leaving them alone at first because I don’t want anyone to get hurt. My cat was a a shelter cat, I don’t know a lot about his original home, but he definitely in some type of abusive household and was very cautious, shy, and anxious about everything when I first got him. He has relaxed soooo much and I’m so proud of the progress he’s made. He doesn’t have experience with dogs and is always on alert/protection mode when we’ve brought the dog over to my apartment. What has your experience been like in this situation?. How have your pets adjusted to each other and how long did it take? What can I do to help my cat relax and feel safe? We will have space to separate them,but would like them to be able to cohabitants peacefully. Already planning to get some gates that allow the cat to get through and keep the dog out. Any advice is much appreciated!!:)
